Why boys are born to give their mothers more trouble
by JENNY HOPE, Daily Mail
Maternity ward staff have long believed that a difficult labour and birth is the sign of a boy baby. Now a scientific survey has backed them up.
Doctors have confirmed that boys are more trouble than girls from the start, causing more complications during childbirth.
They produce longer labours that are more likely to end in a Caesarean section or a delivery assisted by instruments, says the study.
There is also a higher chance that there will be a need for hormone injections to stimulate the mother's contractions or for foetal blood sampling because of suspected distress for the baby.
One reason for the extra labour and birth problems is that boy babies are generally larger, heavier and less chubby than girls - and they have bigger heads.
But researcher Maeve Eogan, of the National Maternity Hospital in Dublin, said the physical differences do not wholly explain why boys are more troublesome.
She said: 'We still don't know what the answer is. The boys appear to suffer more distress in the womb, which suggests that there is obviously some sort of inherent vulnerability of male infants to the whole process of labour.'
Dr Eogan, a specialist registrar, and her research team colleagues studied detailed data on the deliveries of 4,070 boys and 4,005 girls at the Irish hospital between 1997 and 2000.
All the women were carrying their first child and they went into labour spontaneously at full-term, says a
report of the study which is published in the British Medical Journal today.
Multiple births, including twins, were not covered in the research.
Most of the babies arrived with no trouble, but there were complications with 29 per cent of the boys against only 24 per cent of the girls.
Boys had a 6 per cent chance of needing a Caesarean section, 8 per cent of requiring forceps and 15 per cent of having to have ventouse (vacuum pump) assistance.
In contrast, only 4 per cent of girls had a Caesarean section delivery, 6 per cent forceps, and 14 per cent ventouse.
Dr Eogan said: 'Women are particularly interested in the length of labour and for boys the average time was just over six hours, compared with just under six hours for girls.'
Mothers with boy babies were significantly more likely to need oxytocin - a hormone that stimulates contractions during delivery. Baby
boys were also more likely to need foetal blood sampling, which is carried out when it is suspected the baby is suffering distress in the womb.
But the extra childbirth problems tended not to be serious. The rate of admission to the hospital's specialist care baby unit was the same for boys and girls.
There was no significant difference between the sexes, either, for other factors such as the length of pregnancy or the need for antibiotics during labour.
Dr Eogan said: 'Complications of labour and delivery are more likely to be encountered if the woman is carrying a male rather than a female.
'But if a woman delivers a male, regardless of how she delivers him, he is not more likely to require intensive care or medicine and the chances are she will be leaving the labour ward with her baby.'
She said the study appeared to support the standard medical staff quip of 'It must be a boy' when a woman has problems during labour and delivery.
Dr Maggie Blott, consultant obstetrician at King's College Hospital, London, agreed that it was commonplace for medical staff to blame boys for causing more trouble during childbirth.
She said: 'It's something of an old wives' tale but it's usually true and now appears to have some foundation.
'We know boys are more vulnerable shortly after birth and this appears to be linked to what has happened in the womb.
'A more difficult delivery may well play a part.
'They certainly seem to make life more difficult for themselves and their mothers at a very early stage.'
